[Tayo: Y4K Further Still] |
||
|
Having
created themselves a niche within the breaks/progressive scene with
acclaimed releases from the Tyrant duo, Slam, Hybrid and the Y3K series,
Distinctive Breaks now throw themselves headfirst into an exciting new off
shoot, Y4K. Where
the Y3K releases continue to be DJ Hyper’s stronghold, Y4K offers the
listeners a roving and evolving roster of DJ's, with the first mix coming
from Tayo, one of the breakbeat scene’s pioneers. His
skills behind the decks led Jockey Slut to describe him, (along with Rennie
Pilgrem & Adam Freeland), as “becoming as influential to the next
generation as Fabio and Grooverider were to aspiring junglists”. And in
addition to his recent departure from the world of PR, he also runs the hip
Mob label, home to Stanton Warriors and Beber while continuing to peddle his
journalistic skills for Jockey Slut & Muzik. Oh, and did I mention the
radio shows for Ministry and Groovetech? Y4K
is Tayo’s second mix album and it’s abundant in all things beat driven
and groovy, perhaps a little nod to his house alter ego under which he
sometimes plays out. Featuring tracks from the scene’s finest and
exclusives from Beber & Tamra with ‘Travellin’ On’ – think
summer and strangely think Orbital; Meat Katie’s ‘Rotten dot com’ and
the undeniably shit hot, Stanton Warriors with ‘Da Antidote’. Rennie
Pilgrem & Blim offer up a fresh minimal driving nu funk with inspiration
coming from a chance meeting in Sydney when Rennie met with an Eskimo at a
club…, no really. Tayo follows the logical progression into the studio and
emerges with his new single ‘Fire Good’, a collaboration with Precision
Cuts. There’s Uberzone & Rennie Pilgrem’s tribal breakbeat outing
‘Black Widow’ which was a firm favourite with DJ Icey, Adam Freeland,
Sander Kleinenberg and Mr Burridge. Then
there’s the records verging on near classic status – the West Coast
fraternity are nicely represented with the Scrath D & H Bomb
collaboration and a ‘Red Pill’/blue pill conundrum, plus Jackal &
Hyde’s ‘Beyond’. PMT’s ‘Gyromancer’ was an anthem for just about
everyone and ‘Scram’ by the Plump DJs is included too, and they
definitely need no introduction. Matthew
B makes an appearance with his Sueno Latino remix of the same track and his
Tokamak guise with ‘Toryldnya’. While
the promo CD was presented in a straight mix form, the finished version
promises a plethora of pirate radio show behaviour with the Stanton Warriors
and Lee Coombes offering up shout outs and the likes. Tayo
will be cutting a dash behind the decks at the following emporiums of
quality music: Bugged Out, Boutique, Fabric and Rooty with the Basement Jaxx
in Brixton, where he holds residencies. ‘Y4K: Deeper Still’ was released on March 26th via Distinctive Breaks on CD and limited vinyl.
