Utilising the same atmospheric tribal intro as featured in his NuBreed compilation, Steve Lawler kicked off his third visit to Singapore as part of the Global Underground tour. Ecstacy…ecstacy…. Playing his brand of house - tribal, percussive and deep. The first hour of his mix did not seem out of the ordinary and was akin to his previous mixes. No doubt he was packing the crowd in with selections such as Celeda’s ‘Turn Me On’. With breakdowns and build-ups, the crowd was just screaming for more. 2 Boys 1 Girl’s ‘Twisted’ threatened to raise the raise the roof. The dancefloor was packed with eager clubbers raising their hands in the air. Not forgetting the mandatory glowsticks in the air. Grooving to a mix peppered with tribal percussions and Maniam’s tabla beats, everyone was having a good if not an ecstatic one. Playing one crowd pleaser after another (Aztec Mystic’s 'Jaguar', Mory Kante’s ‘Yeke Yeke’) and egging everyone on. The Boxed boys were in the house and filming most of the night’s event from the DJ booth to the dance podium. As everyone cheered on, Steve played an encore to mass approval - Laurent Garnier ‘s 'The Man With The Red Face’. Hands remained in the even as the lights came on, one last cut for the GU tour. A Steve Lawler NuBreed CD sampler and stickers were given out to the lucky few as door gifts. This just added to the party atmosphere. |
